Trillium Health is notifying its public health partners and the community about a voluntary national recall by Teleflex Medical. The recall involves atomizer tips included in multi-step naloxone rescue kits that are used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
As part of our harm reduction model of care, Opioid Overdose Prevention kits are distributed at educational sessions for the community and public health partners. These kits may contain the affected product currently being recalled. The device is commonly used by first responders or laypersons first on the scene of individuals experiencing an apparent Opioid overdose.
This recall does not impact the medication itself, but rather the nasal atomizer, which is used to administer the drug. The recall was issued after it was discovered that faulty atomizers may shoot a stream of naloxone into patients’ noses rather than producing a mist, potentially making the overdose reversal drug less effective.
If you currently have a supply of naloxone, do not discard the medication. Many nasal atomizers are not subject to this recall. Teleflex may have difficulty satisfying the demand for its MAD300 device in the near future. The Department of Health is working diligently to ensure that you receive naloxone as expeditiously as possible. The
NYSDOH AIDS Institute is evaluating these events and will provide additional information. Please send any questions to overdose@health.ny.gov.
We are monitoring this recall closely and will provide our partners and the public with more information when it becomes available.
